2015-12-29 Tue
In 2010, the Florence Nightingale £2 silver proof coin was issued to commemorate 150 years of nursing. Most collectors missed out on the coin due to inadequate attention received from the Royal Mint; a result of which only 5117 pieces were issued. The obverse depicts the bust of Queen Elizabeth II with her name and the denomination in words inscribed around it. The reverse shows a hand being held in two hands, which symbolises the ‘healing hands’ of nurses over the course of the profession’s 150 years, along with the inscriptions ‘1820 – Florence Nightingale – 1910’ and ‘Two Pounds’ surrounding it. The coin has an inscribed edge which reads ‘150 Years Of Nursing’.
The proof quality coin is made of .925 silver, plated with a fine gold outer ring. It weighs 12 grams and measures 28.4 mm in diameter.
